Works on the bridge are due to start on 17 June.

This is an old masonry bridge. In recent years cracks in the arch have worsened and a number of bricks have fallen into the river.

The works are needed ensure that the bridge is serviceable for years to come. The aim is to carry out the minimum intervention consistent with rehabilitation and prevention of further deterioration of the bridge.

It is proposed to:

  • Replace areas of damaged and missing brickwork and re-point selected areas of the bridge
  • Install stainless helical ties within the arch barrel to strengthen it.

The works are programmed to last for up to four weeks.

Most of the work will be carried out from land either side of the bridge. Scaffolding will be erected on both sides of the bridge but will not encroach into the carriageway. Access will be maintained across the bridge during the works, although there may be short delays when work is taking place on the brick parapets.
