Woodgreen Support Group
Letter sent to all residents in November 2020 from Woodgreen Support Group
As winter approaches and Covid appears to be on the increase in the South, we wait to see how it will affect us, particularly as we go into lockdown in November. During the last lockdown and the months that followed, we all looked after ourselves, and others, in different ways.
Neighbours and friends made sure that prescriptions were collected, shopping was delivered and social contact maintained with those who were self isolating for health or other reasons.
The Scarecrow and Limerick Competitions aimed to lift spirits during a difficult time and were very successful, with 63 scarecrows across Hale and Woodgreen; all of them imaginative and several produced by children…and some great limericks too.
This letter is to let you know about some of the support and activities that will be available during the next few months.
• Firstly, the Helpline (01725 493011) is available for anyone who would like help with shopping, collection of prescriptions, or just a friendly chat. Over 20 people in the Village have offered to help where this is needed. Your call will reach either Sue Allpress, Helena Datta, Tim Cant or Rob Hutchinson who will take turns manning the phone and make the necessary arrangements with one of our volunteers to help you.
• Following the Scarecrow competition, we propose that a “Christmas Decoration Display” takes place from 1st December to 5th January. This might include a Snowman ( virtual or the real thing!), Father Christmas, Christmas Wreath or anything else you can think of. The aim is to “light up” Woodgreen in as many ways as possible There will be childrens’ prizes for displays by those aged 2 to 14 years. On a similar theme, and in conjunction with the Hale and Woodgreen Horticultural Society, why not join in their Gardening Competition and plant up a whacky container with Spring Bulbs; as many as you like and in a container of any shape and size (barring skips!). Entries, when in flower, to be displayed at the Village Shop… with prizes both for Adults, and for Children up to the age of 14, to be given for the best, whatever that means! Bring your display to the Shop when you think it is ready for maximum impact as we escape the Winter Blues.
• Also why not take the opportunity, while out exercising, to visit the Woodgreen Wildlife Garden. This has been created, by members of the HWHS, behind the Village Hall, where once stood the old pre-school garden. The garden still has lots of end of season beauty, and is designed to look good all year round. It has a seat for you to rest and contemplate better times ahead. Depending on Government regulations at the time, a Lunch Club will be started at the Horse and Groom in January, on a twice monthly basis ( socially distanced, rule of 6 etc.) The aim is to provide a safe social contact for those who would welcome an excellent meal and a good chat. To sign up to this contact Jason direct on 01725 510739 who will advise you of the arrangements.
Finally best wishes all, and please stay safe…
Sue Allpress, John Clarke, Helena Datta, Tim Cant, David Mussell and Rob Hutchinson.
